Fashion

For my birthday (which hasn't happened yet), my mum has given me some money for some new winter clothes. As we are staying in NZ until Febuary (I realise I may not have said this before), I now need a whole winter wardrobe which wasn't really in the plan. So I brought only a few big jumpers with me. And having not brought so much clothing, a few items have been worn to death now...so the new clothes are really needed.
So yesterday, I did a very brief perusal of a few of the nicer shops in the area so see what I might want to spend birthday money on (and will then go to the cheaper shops and spend my own money too!!). The only problem is that the fashion here seems to be mostly really quite weird at the moment. But I don't know whether that is NZ fashion or whether UK fashion has also gone weird. So should I go with the weirdness or resist it?! So confusing...
All I wanted was a lovely cuddly jumper or two and a few new layerage options...
Ah, the trials and tribulations.

I think we need to know weird in what way.... piccies please!

Fashion in the UK is mostly normal but there is also a large range of true 1960s/70s smock tops... unflattering to all but the heavily pregnant.

I wrote a whole reply to you but it doesn't seem to have appeared here. Ho hum.

I agree with MM above, the smock thing just does not work on 95% of brits because we have hips.

However, I thoroughly agree with big round sunglasses which you should not pay much for. Hope you have that trend over there, if not, bring it!

I dont know if you already own a pair and if they are anywhere on the NZ fashion radar, but footless leggings, which by all accounts were going to be a very short-lived phenomenon, have stood the test of time here for a good few years now. The masses of brighton are still in them, so again I say if you haven't got them I am happy to pledge you a pair in the post to help you continue to wear those skirts into Autumn and Winter.

Yes, describe 'weird' fashion please.
Love ya.
Ruth :)

Hmm. Well.
The main weird thing that was distressing me was the tendency to make cardigans into fake blazers - very short & boxy, double-breasted, excessive buttons.
The rest were just peculiarly shaped, I'm not sure I can describe so perhaps I will try to hunt down some pics for you...
We have a reasonable amount of the large sunglasses...and leggings are very popular with certain demographics!

With MM and Ruth except that as well as hips we have boobs which is why the smocks are totally, completely, unflatteringly distressing.
We definitely need your definition of "weird" but do you remember when I was in Germany though, and people started wearing large hoop earrings, crop jeans with boots, and really pointy shoes? I was so distressed at the eighties-ness of it all and couldn't wait to come back to the "normal" UK... and just look what had happened while I'd been gone! ;) xx

Sounds like a different type of weirdness to UK weirdness at the moment... as mm says - clothes for stick insects or pregnant people, lots of loud 60s prints, and recently over last few weeks, dresses with wide stripes of bright colours that make you look like a fruit pastille ice lolly. However, I am liking the excessively baggy bell sleeves - they are quite flattering. Have fun clothes shopping! xx

Well, I did some hunting on t'internet and strangely, all retailers seem to be only advertising their reasonably normal clothes (or smock tops, or pinafores...) which you already seem to have experienced. I guess with the different seasons the fashions won't be too closely linked - except that "they" believe this is a tropical country and so generally don't put out enough winter clothes!
Welshy - that was the sort of trauma I was thinking I ought to try to prepare myself against...perhaps I should just spend the last few months here regularly checking DP, M&S, Top Shop websites to check that things haven't gone too mad...
d/w - the ice lolly look? Nice...
Thank you, I will indeed enjoy shopping...for a little while at least!
