I wouldn't advise all the ones I've read, nor am I snubbing all the ones I've not italicised...
And I resisted putting comments next to a lot of them...

Don't do it, don't read "Five people you meet in heaven" - its a giant pile of bird crap.... sentimental hogwash...
Hope you will read the Poisonwood Bible, The Stone Diaries, and She's come undone - three of my favourite books.
Go Steinbeck... I'll lend you those when you're back in the UK. I think I might do this list thingy....
I think we've read a lot of the same books. I also found it difficult not to add comments like 'this book really made me cry'.
MM - ah, but sometimes I like a bit of sentimental hogwash! (depending what kind of hogwash).
Pom - That was a recurring theme wasn't it? Husbink gets very miffed when I read (and then claim to enjoy) books that make me cry. I also wanted to highlight the ones that I'd read more than once...
I didn't even bother to restrain myself and did add a list of which ones make me cry. 'Cos they do.
I would also like to add that I only read Lord of the Flies because I had to in school, not because I wanted to!

Ellie - Ditto on Lord of the Flies! I've wondered about rereading it...and seeing whether you notice all that symbolism about "the fire" and so on when you aren't being forced to...
